Summary:
The Congress will discuss the diverse nuances of the ritual use of ayahuasca in the treatment of dependency from a multidisciplinary perspective. Representatives from various treatment centers throughout South America will join with academic researchers from the fields of anthropology, medicine, psychology, and law. Concepts such as “drug,” addiction,” “health,” and “dependency” will be discussed, along with the boundaries between therapeutic, ritual, and religious practices. The presenters will consider narratives on experiences with ayahuasca, and will also seek to evaluate the efficacy of different treatment programs. Finally, the legal restrictions and possibilities regarding the therapeutic use of ayahuasca will be examined from a comparative and transnational perspective, especially focusing on the Brazilian and Peruvian contexts.
