This book unites international experts from several disciplines, such as anthropology, ethnopharmacology, philosophy, psychology and medicine, to address the historical usages of these plants in various settings. These include initiations specific to the traditional shamanic cultures, therapies and experiments conducted with drug addicts, and spiritual quests and courses for people in search of new spiritualities, characteristic of the reappropriation logic of the New Age movement. The authors analyze the somatic and psychic effects of these psychotropic plants as well as the circumstances and motivations of people involved in these activities. Without censorship or taboos, with rigor and a constant concern for objectivity, the 16 chapters of this collection offer an original reflection to a sensitive and highly debated topic. This effort represents a dense contribution to the French speaking world.About the editors:Sebastien Baud is an anthropologist and research associate at the Centre de Recherches et d’Etudes en Sciences sociales (CRESS), EA 1334, Strasbourg University. His work questions the knowledge and shamanic practices of Awajún (jivaro group) and the quichua ethnolinguistic communities in Peru. Recently, he edited the book La Conscience dans tous ses états, Approches anthropologiques et psychiatriques, cultures et thérapies (Masson, 2009). He is also author of the book, Faire parler les montagnes. Initiation chamanique dans les Andes (Cuzco, Peru), which will be published soon. His first works at the Reunion Island focused on a rural community of “poor white people” (Salazie village) and on the norms and values of people of Indian descent. Then, as research associate at the Center for South Asia Studies, University of California, Berkeley, he studied the cultural and social adaptations of Indian migrants in San Francisco area. He has been working for fifteen years on New Age and neo-shamanism in United-States and Europe. He is the author of Honneur, chance & destin.
