Summary:
The consumption of psychoactive substances is a recurrent phenomenon found in numerous human societies, and the ways by which the different modes of consumption are conceived of and experienced varies historically and culturally. It was because of this fact that the book Drugs and Culture: New Perspectives was created. The collection expresses an appreciation for the role that the social sciences play in reflections on the topic of drugs and, in parallel, seeks to relate this analysis to an extensive body of debates and discussions. It is argued that the topic of drugs should be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective that takes into consideration not only a substance’s pharmacological and psychological, but also its socio-cultural, aspects.

Excerpt from the Preface:
“Drugs are not mere compounds with determined pharmacological properties that can be in essence definitely classified as good or bad. Their existence and their uses involve complex questions of freedom and discipline, suffering and pleasure, devotion and adventure, transcendence and knowledge, sociability and criminality, morality and violence, commerce and war.
Júlio Assis Simões
Profesor in the Departament of Anthropology at USP and a researcher in NEIP.
From the Presentation:
"This book calls for a more attentive reflection on the diverse uses of drugs in different populations. This diversity of uses and modes of consumption is a mirror of our own cultural diversity. Our scientists and our legislators should, in some way, take into consideration the cultural dimension of drugs in order to shape more efficient and more adequate policies for today’s world.”
Gilberto Gil (Minister of Culture) and Juca Ferreira (Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Culture)
